HOLLYWOOD—Well, surprises continue this summer at the box-office America. I was certain with “The Emoji Movie” and “Atomic Blonde” hitting theaters that “Dunkirk” would be dethroned from the top spot at the box-office, but I was wrong. Christopher Nolan’s war epic earned another $28 million to maintain its grip on audiences. After 2 weeks in theaters, the drama has already amounted over $100 million at the domestic box-office.
Nabbing second place was “The Emoji Movie” which took in just over $25 million during its debut weekend. I expected the movie to do bigger business, but let’s be honest the animated flick was not marketed as heavy as it should have been. The sleeper of the summer “Girls Trip” dropped to third place adding another $20 million to its tally bringing it domestic total to just over $67 million. Not bad, not bad at all for an R-rated, African-American led comedy people.
Failing to ignite sparks for moviegoers was the Charlize Theron, spy-thriller “Atomic Blonde” with just over $18 million to land in fourth place. The movie has been hotly touted in recent weeks, but with “Dunkirk” and “Girls Trip” vying for moviegoer’s attention; it was clear who the victor was.
Rounding out the top five was “Spider-Man: Homecoming” adding another $13.6 million to its tally after more than a month in theaters. This weekend sees the highly anticipated release of the Kathryn Bigelow biopic “Detroit” chronicling the 1967 riots that dismantled the city and “The Dark Tower” starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba.
