UNITED STATES—Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen officially resigned from her position submitting her letter of resignation to The White House on Sunday, April 7.
Neilsen was the 6th Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. She has served in the position since December 2017.
The following message was on Secretary Nielsen’s webpage:
“To the brave and dedicated men and women of DHS, I submitted my resignation to the President this evening. I am eternally grateful and proud of what you do each and every day to protect our homeland – each of you are why I came back to serve my country. Our missions as a Department are vast and have never been more vital. You are in the arena- keep up the good fight. Thank you for your sacrifices and those of your families.

Nielsen resignation came at the heels of a recent trip to Calexico, California, as a multi-state tour to assess and oversee the Department of Homeland Security’s wide action to personally oversee the humanitarian and border security emergency along the U.S. border with Mexico.
President Trump, Secretary Nielsen, local law enforcement, and members of Congress met to discuss the US Border Patrol (USBP) Calexico Station regarding the dramatic increase in unaccompanied children and families coming over the border and measures that would need to be taken to find permanent solutions.
President Trump Tweeted his gratitude toward Secretary Nielsen and announced the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
In a tweet, Nielsen agreed to stay on until Wednesday, April 10 “to assist with the orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted.”
