SAN FRANCISCO—Residents in the Bay Area experienced an earthquake during the early hours of Saturday, October 5. The 3.5 magnitude quake occurred off the coast of South San near Manor Beach; just five miles off the coast of Pacifica.
The U.S. Geological Survey released a detailed report on the earthquake which places the origin time at 8:41 a.m. The last significant earthquake in the Bay Area transpired on October 30, 2007. That 5.6 magnitude quake occurred along the Calaveras Fault and remains the most powerful earthquake in the Bay Area since 1989.
San Francisco residents felt buildings shake and a few clattering dishes for less than a minute before the shaking stop.
“I woke up to what felt like a truck driving through my living room,” said a local resident when asked about the early morning earthquake.
Researchers at The Livermore Lab have been studying the potential effects of a sizable earthquake could have on the Bay Area. Below is research from Livermore and Berkeley Lab Scientists with the help of a supercomputer.
