HOLLYWOOD—I said it last week, and I will say it again, “Joker” is a movie that has so much buzz people want to see it. Last week it earned over $96 million during its debut weekend in theaters, this week it remained on top of the box-office grossing another $55 million. That is damn impressive because the flick only dropped about 40 percent. If anything, most flicks drop 50 to 60 percent during their second week in theaters, but “Joker” not so much. After 10 days, “Joker” has amounted over $190 million at the domestic box-office and over $500 million on a global scale.
Defying the odds to land in second place was the animated version of “The Addams Family” with $30.3 million. Yes, the reviews for this flick have not been great, but families still came out in strong droves to propel the flick to a solid debut. However, not faring so well with audiences even though it was heavily advertised was the Will Smith starrer “Gemini Man” that landed in third place with $20.5 million. Yeah, I think even Ang Lee’s name couldn’t save this movie, that just looks bad.
Falling fourth place was the animated flick “Abominable” with a little over $6 million to bring its domestic tally over $46 million. Rounding out the top five was “Downton Abbey” with $4.9 million which has since amounted over $82 million at the domestic box-office. This weekend the “Joker” might be dethroned from the top spot as Angelina Jolie returns in the sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and the sequel “Zombieland: Double Tap” arrive in theaters to tantalize audiences.
