HOLLYWOOD—Actress Suzanne Somers, who was the star of the hit ABC comedy series “Three’s Company” died on Saturday, October 14. Somers was 76. Her publicist, R. Couri Hay, first broke to the news to Page Six. She died at her Palm Springs home surrounded by family and friends. Somers had been battling breast cancer for a series of years. She was diagnosed with melanoma in 2000. In April 2000, Somers was first diagnosed with breast cancer. In July 2023, Somers announced that her cancer had returned.
The actress posted on her Instagram page the following message regarding her health:
“Since I have been taking time off from work, many of you have asked for more details about my health. As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down. I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not the new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter. Alan has been by my side every step of the way. I can’t even explain how much he has done for me. If it’s even possible, we are even closer than ever. My incredible family has been so supportive, and have helped so much by keeping the business running so you can still have access to all the wonderful products. Thank you for continued love and support. It’s only about who you love and who loves you – and I love you!”
Somers stared in “Three’s Company” for five seasons, from 1977-1981, where she co-starred with John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt. She portrayed Chrissy Snow on the series. The actress also starred in other TV sitcoms including “Step by Step” alongside Patrick Duffy for several seasons, “Starsky and Hutch,” “She’s the Sheriff,” “The Suzanne Somers Show” and recently appeared as a contestant on the reality competition series “Dancing With the Stars.” The actress also appeared in several films including “American Graffiti,” “Nothing Personal” and “Serial Mom.”
She married Bruce Somers in 1965, where they had one son, Bruce Jr. She married Alan Hammel in 1977. Her Malibu home was destroyed by a wildfire in 2007. She posed in Playboy in 1980 and 1984. She earned fame in the 1990s as the spokesperson of the Thighmaster, a device that was heavily promoted on infomercials that allowed you to exercise by placing the device between your thighs and knees. In May 2014, she was inducted into the Infomercial Hall of Fame.
Somers would have turned 77 on Monday, October 16. She is survived by her husband, Alan and her son Bruce Jr. and three granddaughters.
