HOLLYWOOD—I guess we can say let’s get ready for awards season?! The nominees for the 2024 Grammy Awards were announced on Friday, November 10. There were some names that were expected, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Ice Spice to name a few, but it was artist SZA who dominated with a total of nine nominations including Album of the Year for “SOS.” Followed close behind was Victoria Monet with seven nominations including Record of the Year.
Other contenders include Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift, who all earned six nominations apiece. Cyrus, Rodrgio and Swift will compete alongside SZA for the top prize of the night: Album of the Year. Swift could earn her fourth prize in the category if she wins for “Midnights.” Hoping that doesn’t happen, I think Taylor Swift is an exceptional artist, but when you don’t have powerhouse like Adele not winning each time she’s nominated, and someone like Beyonce who has never won the big prize despite countless nominations for critical albums, I don’t see why Swift should continue to claim the prize when others are worthy of the accolade.
Former Album of the Year winner, Jon Batiste is nominated for Album, Song and Record of the Year. Batiste won the top award in 2021 for “We Are.” He is the only male nominated in the Album of the Year race. Were there snubs? It wouldn’t be an awards show if it wasn’t. There was no love for Bad Bunny this year, Jelly Roll or Luke Combs, who many expected Roll and Combs to garner some nominations in the big three (Album, Song and Record of the Year) for their music. The Grammys are becoming more and more predictable and not as important for many in the music industry.
