SAN FRANCISCO—On Friday, October 12, the San Francisco Police Department received a community policing safe passage award from the MetLife Foundation Community Police Partnership Awards. The award ceremonies started at 2p.m. in the courtyard of the Turk Street Apartments, 201 Turk Street, in San Francisco.
Mike Biel, commander of SFPD, accepted the award; in addition District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim and MetLife representatives joined him. In addition to the award, the Safe Passage Committee received a $15,000 cash award to continue the safety partnerships from the Bay Area Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).
Captain John Garrity of Tenderloin Station said, “The Safe Passage Program has been a team effort and partnership by everyone involved in the Tenderloin area, focusing on one of our most important assets – the children in the neighborhood.”
The SFPD helps establish young students from their way to school, home, and to neighborhood youth activities. Some police station patrols are set around the beginning and end of school and youth activity hours. A sidewalk mural is set to designate the safe route.
