SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, December 9, two separate district attorneys filed civil lawsuits against the ride-sharing service, Uber. In a joint press release, San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón and Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey stated that Uber was guilty of failing to collect sufficient background checks for their drivers and illegally servicing airports.
Uber’s top competitor, Lyft, has already faced similar claims from the prosecuting duo, reaching a $500,000 settlement that requires Lyft to release accurate information regarding company background checks.
“Unfortunately, Uber, unlike Lyft, has refused to comply with reasonable regulations as required by California law,” said Lacey. “As a result, Uber continues to put consumers at risk by misleading the public about the background checks of its drivers and its unwillingness to ensure that correct fares are charged.”
Uber is also accused of tacking on $1 “safe ride fees” and $4 “airport feel tolls,” the former charge imposed without drivers paying for the right to offer chauffeur service to the airport.
The company is in discussions with the district attorneys. However, to date, no settlement has been reached.
