SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, September 11, the San Francisco Police Department announced the plan of “Operation Safe Schools” was a success.
Operation Safe Schools was an operation that targeted narcotics enforcement operation during a two week period that began on August 20. The goal of the operation was to curtail narcotics trafficking and violent crime around schools. It focused on schools in the Bayview, Mission, and Tenderloin Districts.
Seven “buy bust” operations were conducted in the three districts over the two week period. The seven operations resulted in 25 felony arrests for narcotics sales to a police officer.
The San Francisco Police Department guaranteed offenders to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law with the help of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s office charged ten out of those 25 arrests with school zone enhancement.
School zone enhancement is from that provides a sentencing enhancement. According to the Section 11353.6 of the Health and Safety Code, the school zone enhancement “provides for a sentencing enhancement for sales and possession sales of controlled substances within 1,000 feet of a school that is either in session or being used by minors for school related purposes.”
